The Biodesign Institute at Arizona State University represents an advanced example of sustainable and adaptable architectural design. This multi-phase facility integrates life sciences and engineering disciplines to support cutting-edge research in biotechnology, bioengineering, and nanotechnology. Its design emphasizes flexibility, featuring modular research spaces that can evolve with scientific advancements. From an environmental standpoint, the Institute incorporates numerous sustainable features, including drought-tolerant landscaping, a stormwater management system, and energy-efficient systems that meet rigorous LEED standards. Building A achieved LEED Gold, while Building B attained LEED Platinum certification. The project’s sustainable strategy extends from site selection, which leverages urban infrastructure and transit options, to the use of low-VOC materials, high-efficiency water and energy systems, and the optimization of natural light. The architectural approach facilitates interdisciplinary collaboration while prioritizing energy efficiency and environmental responsibility, positioning the Institute as a leader in ecological research facility design.

“The vote for the Biodesign Institute as Laboratory of the Year was unanimous on the first round, which happens only rarely. The other laboratories that were entered were very good in their own right, but the Biodesign Institute was just an overwhelmingly strong candidate.”
