The College of William & Mary

West Utility Plant

The West Utility Plant includes all equipment and systems to provide chilled water and low temperature heating hot water utilities for distribution to the New Academic Campus and the Northwest Campus Life and Student Housing portions of campus.

The facility is arranged in a simple rectilinear shape, with the generator area located to the south side of the building, the chiller located to the north side of the building, and the office located on the east side of teh building. This allows for maximum daylighting in the office and affords views to both the chillers and generators.

The design proposed the use of brick, matching the campus color and pattern, glass, and zinc metal panel to complement the adjacent buildings. The exterior facade wraps the new equipment in a brick and glass envelope allowing views into the facility in locations where the equipment and process provides an interesting and pleasing aesthetic. The alignment, scale, and massing of the proposed facility is developed from the context of the adjacent buildings.
