Design Learning Lab: The POD

The Freshman Design Learning Lab, known as “the POD,” is a newly established maker-space located within Duke University’s Levine Science Resource Center. Developed for the Pratt School of Engineering, this facility repurposes a former café space, converting it into a versatile environment for first-year engineering students. The project was completed within a five and a half month timeline, utilizing readily available materials to ensure both visual appeal and functional flexibility. Key features include a flexible overhead pipe grid for power and lighting, movable storage units, and integrated systems for specialized tools such as saws and laser cutters. Additionally, the lab features new audiovisual capabilities and vibrant graphical elements, fostering a dynamic setting that supports 24-hour access and active student engagement.
