In 2017, newly approved courses of study in Engineering, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, and Medicinal Chemistry and Drug Discovery anchored the University’s undergraduate presence at Wake Downtown, located in Wake Forest Innovation Quarter. These programs, along with other planned academic, community, and social opportunities, are housed in a rehabilitated R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company 60 series building, adjacent to the new space for the medical education programs of Wake Forest School of Medicine. Lord Aeck Sargent undertook the renovation, reprogramming, and re-envisioning of the existing historic warehouse building to create a 16,000 sf project spread across four levels. The design includes new, flexible teaching studios and classrooms, teaching labs, research labs, and the Innovation Studio, which features makerspace with 3D printers, solder stations, circuit board printers, and a machine shop. The result is bright, active classrooms, labs, and collaboration spaces that support a dynamic teaching and research program, enhancing the educational experience for the growing Engineering Department at Wake Downtown.

"Our experience working with LAS has been amazing and I cannot say enough about how grateful we are to you all. Every time I walk through our 3rd floor spaces especially, I am reminded of our work together and feel so proud. Your designs and work inspire us!"
