The restoration of Louisville’s City Hall, a late-Victorian Italianate and Second Empire style structure, involved addressing critical exterior issues to preserve its historic character while ensuring structural integrity. The project, led by Lord Aeck Sargent, began with a thorough condition assessment supported by 3D laser scanning, followed by mortar and paint analysis to select compatible restoration materials. The scope of work included cleaning, repair, and repointing of limestone masonry, stabilizing deteriorated column capitals, restoring the cast iron cornice, and refurbishing the wood windows, with a focus on returning the building to its original color scheme. Copper gutters and downspouts were replaced as part of the effort to manage water infiltration. During the restoration, Lord Aeck Sargent collaborated with structural engineers to address structural concerns, such as pinning damaged columns and securing failing connections in the cornice. Despite the extensive work required, all city government functions remained operational throughout the construction process, underscoring the importance of maintaining public access during the project.
