University of Kentucky

Patterson Hall Renovation

Lord Aeck Sargent undertook the extensive rehabilitation of Patterson Hall, a historic structure dating back to 1903, initially serving as the University of Kentucky’s first women’s dormitory. Tasked with transforming the building into a modern Living + Learning Center, Lord Aeck Sargent maintained a balance between preservation and adaptive reuse. The renovation preserved the character-defining features, such as the original wood doors and stairways, while integrating contemporary needs with classrooms, study spaces, and faculty offices. Modern updates included comprehensive technology integration and code-compliant additions, like a new elevator and egress stairs. Exterior restorations involved meticulous tuck-pointing of brickwork, renewal of metal cornices, and the reconstruction of side porches to serve as social spaces. This project not only restored Patterson Hall’s historical essence but also aligned it with current educational standards, positioning it as a central element in the university’s campus development.
