Margaret M. Alkek Building for Biomedical Research

The Margaret M. Alkek Biomedical Research Building stands as an eight-story architectural marvel spanning 203,000 square feet, dedicated to groundbreaking biomedical research. With five stories solely dedicated to cutting-edge biomedical research laboratories, the building is a hub for interdisciplinary research in cardiovascular sciences, cancer, pharmacogenomics, genomics, and proteomics. Designed to foster collaboration and flexibility, the open lab plans and extensive use of interior glass allow visual connectivity and adaptability. A hallmark of the facility is its integration of computational and dry analytical areas adjacent to wet laboratory modules, enhancing interdisciplinary interactions. A two-story vivarium, featuring a 30,000 cage barrier rodent facility, underscores the commitment to animal research, forming the core of the renowned Comparative Medicine program. The vivarium's design stands out with its innovative use of natural light, spacious procedure rooms, and dedicated clean and dirty elevators, prioritizing both operational efficiency and the well-being of staff and animals.
