The Mark Jefferson Science Complex at Eastern Michigan University (EMU) underwent a comprehensive renovation and expansion project, revitalizing the existing building and linking it with Strong Hall. The initial phase involved evaluating and reprogramming the existing facilities, leading to the addition of an 80,000-square-foot structure housing various science departments and laboratories. Subsequent phases included the complete renovation of the original 1969 building and assorted renovations, including an animal suite. The new five-story addition features a spherical planetarium/classroom and incorporates sustainable elements like metal sunshades, a green roof, and a rain garden, enhancing the campus's western entry. This cohesive complex not only redefines EMU's science education but also integrates teaching and research while prioritizing energy efficiency, achieving a 30% improvement above the ASHRAE standard through innovative design elements like chilled beams and strategic daylighting strategies.
