Lord Aeck Sargent, in collaboration with Midtown Alliance and Renew Atlanta, spearheaded the redesign of a 1.1-mile corridor of Piedmont Avenue, a crucial north-south artery linking Atlanta’s Downtown, Midtown, and Buckhead areas. Partnering with Kimley-Horn on transportation strategy, the firm led an in-depth analysis of the corridor's safety issues, underutilized spaces, and ADA non-compliance, which informed the design of comprehensive "complete street" solutions. The concept prioritized pedestrian and cyclist safety by integrating a northbound protected bike lane aligned with five existing routes, reducing vehicular speeds through targeted traffic-calming measures, and formalizing on-street parking to enhance accessibility. Pedestrian connectivity and ADA accessibility were addressed through improved crosswalks, multi-use pathways, and curb ramps, while stormwater planters were strategically incorporated to mitigate runoff impact. Through a collaborative public engagement process, Lord Aeck Sargent’s landscape strategy set a foundation for transforming Piedmont Avenue into a more balanced, multi-modal urban environment.
