In July 2016, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) awarded a $500,000 Choice Neighborhoods Planning Grant to the Metropolitan Development and Housing Agency (MDHA) and the Martha O’Bryan Center to support the revitalization of J.C. Napier Place Homes and Tony Sudekum Apartments, along with the surrounding neighborhood in Nashville. This initiative aimed to develop a comprehensive Transformation Plan, focusing on enhancing housing, neighborhood infrastructure, and educational opportunities within the community. Lord Aeck Sargent, as a member of the Design Team, collaborated closely with community residents and stakeholders to create a neighborhood revitalization framework and on-site redevelopment plan. This plan was developed to ensure a cohesive, connected, and diverse community, prioritizing the 1-for-1 replacement of the existing 821 federally subsidized housing units. The framework also included strategies for creating mixed-income, mixed-use spaces, enhancing public transportation, and incorporating sustainable design principles. The redevelopment plan emphasized the integration of green spaces and transit improvements, aligning with broader local initiatives such as Nashville’s Complete Streets and sustainability goals.
