Avondale Estates Historic District Guidelines

Lord Aeck Sargent was engaged by the City of Avondale Estates to update the Historic District Guidelines, a critical document guiding the preservation efforts within the district. Originally established in 1986 as part of the National Register, the district is a notable example of the "garden suburb" movement, with key contributions from landscape architecture and urban planning. The project required a comprehensive revision of the guidelines to reflect contemporary preservation standards, drawing from earlier guidelines established in 1995 and 2004. The revised document, shaped by the Secretary of Interior’s Standards and extensive stakeholder engagement, aims to be highly visual and user-friendly. It outlines the district's character-defining features, focusing on the preservation of its unique architectural, landscape, and urban planning elements while providing clear protocols for modifications to existing structures.
